Background

Glimmer of Hope is a registered non profit organization in Sudan that works in advocacy & support for the visually impaired in Sudan. They closely work with Alnour Institute, the only National Educational Institution to cater for the visually impaired in Sudan.

Alnour Institute for the Visually Impaired is run by the Sudan Ministry of Education, it currently has approximately 120 students

Cubarithm is a basic tool that teaches the visually impaired arithmetics

The Need

In September 2015, Rosa Barugh & Dr. Nazim Haider, UK based Advocates for the Visually Impaired in Sudan approached SAMA to donate 130 Cubarithms to Glimmer of Hope, a local non profit organization that works closely with Alnour Institute for the Visually Impaired in Khartoum North.
Cubarithms are educational tools used by the visually impaired to learn basic arithmetic; the main vendor was located in the United States.
Subsequently, global fundraising ensued and $6115 was raised in less than one week. The vendor was contacted and the cubarithms were ordered. The Target

Located in Khartoum Bahri, Alnour Institute is the main teaching facility for Visually Impaired children. It is home to 120 students at elementary school level. The project is to donate one cubarithm to each student (and 10 as spare for wear/tear/loss) total cost of the 130 Cubarithms is $6115 (a unit costs $46 with $150 for shipping from US vendor to SAMA storage space).


Brannan Slate & Cubes

A rubber slate with a 16 x 16 grid pattern of nests will hold small plastic cubes numbered 0 through 9 in braille (no print). The cubarithm is a tool that the visually impaired use to learn arithmetic

Each cube may be a number or a symbol that the visually impaired student can feel.

The older cubarithms were few in number, the staff had to break them in half (as show in picture above) so that each student can have half a cubarithm.
Now each student will have their own cubarithms and won’t have to break it in half.
The new cubarithms are also more durable.

SAMA is humbled by the great work that the volunteers of Glimmer of Hope and the staff in Alnour institute do every day to improve the lives and livelihood of the visually impaired in Sudan and is proud to be at their service in this initiative.
